Windows Update Check Defeated

Earlier this week Microsoft started to force users to verify their serial numbers before allowing updates from their online update service. However, within 24 hours a work around had been discovered:

Microsoft “Genuine Advantage” cracked in 24h

Most startling is the simplicity of the hack! Before pressing ‘Custom’ or ‘Express’ buttons paste this text to the address bar and press enter:

javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck=’all’)

It turns off the trigger for the key check.

This reminds us of a quote on a hacker’s website we saw a few years ago:

“It doesn’t matter how high they makes the walls (security), we always have a bigger pair of step-ladders (cracks and hacks)!”

Just goes to show that security is an ongoing battle.

FT Spots Scrum and Not a Ball In Sight!

The Financial Times (FT) has an interesting article on how Scrum is being used by many big companies to deliver projects.

Roundtrip Solutions Limited is proud that we had the first ScrumMaster living and practising in Fife.

See Russia’s Biggest Spammer Brutally Murdered in Apartment and Russian Media Hails Spammer’s Murder.

We aren’t advocating murder as a solution but if these people show no respect for the law, no respect for other people’s rights and general are just sleezy in their business operations then they will draw people to them whom only know of more violent ways of dealing with SPAM!

Who needs SpamAssassin when we have Spam Assassin!

RSS Bandit Feed Errors

RSS Bandit has been our chosen news aggregator for some time now. The last few production releases of the application have been causing problems with pulling content from Craig Murphy’s Blog. His blog feed was the only one from dozens of feeds that had a reproduceable problem!

After some research it would appear that Wordpress did indeed have issues up to and including v1.5.1.2. His recent upgrade to run v1.5.1.3 should have fixed this particular problem unless some files from the buggy versions are still being retained and used!

However, RSS Bandit does seem like it has had a part to play in this issue! A solution to the problem can be found HERE.

Basically, the solution is:

  • Download the v1.3.0.31 from CVS
  • Delete the cache files, which can be found in your profile application data folder
    e.g. “C:\Documents and Settings\(windows account name)\Application Data\RssBandit\Cache
  • Copy the files in the v1.3.0.31 zipped archive into the RSS Bandit install directory
    e.g. “C:\Program Files\RssBandit”

Hope this helps other RSS Bandit users who are having connection timeout and closed problems.

UPDATE
Problem has returned and only on Craig Murphy’s Blog!

Spyware makes people wary online

The BBC have an interesting article on Spyware entitled:

Roundtrip Solutions have been recommending for some time now that people use alternative browsers such as Firefox, have multiple antispyware solutions, a firewall and an antivirus that actually works. Some of the better known AV solutions are now pretty poor indeed at stopping viruses getting onto your machine - you have been warned.

Get Firefox! avast! antivirus AVG Antivirus from Grisoft
