It is being reported that the Federation Against Software Theft is preparing to target UK businesses whom have been identified as downloading illegal software from P2P networks such as Kazza.

What are the likely repercussions for those businesses being targetted following the investigation? Try seisure and confiscation of equipment, an unlimited fine and up to 10 years in prison for copyright infringement. They may also be publically names and shamed for using illegal software.

A word of warning: illegally downloaded software may contain viruses, trojans or other nasties that could compromise your business systems. It is also becoming more likely for important security updates and patches to be unavailable to the business as software vendors improve anti-piracy measures. Without effective patching, the software may open a gapping hole in a companies IT infrastructure, straight through to the corporate secrets and core business data. Do you really want your business jewels being stolen from your systems?

Businesses who can’t afford commercially licensed software may wish to look towards the open source community to find a worthy replacement application that will provide the needed business functionality.
