Leaving Aye! Oh! Rhymes with Yell!

Thanks for visiting!

We’ve recently migrated a number of domestic customers away from AOL after poor customer service and support by the ISP.

We even worked on a problem that involved hours of calls to AOL support where we insisted the problem was on the BT network and AOL insisted it was spyware on the computer that was causing the issues and the brand new router had been infected by a virus!

Eventually, the customer got sick and tired of the long wait on hold to just listen to the “words of wisdom” and they therefore asked for a MAC code. Of course AOL offered all kinds of incentives to stay with them, including free or half priced subscription for the next month. By this time the customer was already lost due to critical incidents that had already occurred and just wanted to leave a poor overall service in which they had no faith.

A migration to Zen Internet and a rebuild of the PC didn’t solve the problems, but within a few minutes of being on the phone with Zen Internet support staff we had identified a massive data exchange problem on the line. Zen Internet supported our initial diagnosis that was made within minutes when we first went onsite and a major fault was reported to BT for resolution. That evening a major piece of hardware at the exchange was found to be faulty and required the taking down of 50 users so it could be replaced. The end customer was surfing the proper Internet at warp speed the next day when they tried it, and they now appreciate the differencies between Internet suppliers!

We’re hoping the account termination experience wasn’t as painful as this ex-AOL user in the US.

Or this variation on the same cancellation call is entertaining viewing:

If you’re interested in getting high speed broadband that works as advertised, speaking to customer service and support people who are UK based and generally having a great Internet experience then please contact us for more information on migrating or setting up with Zen Internet.

SPAM Mobile Calls

Just got a missed call from 02920 368701 ( 02920368701 ) on one of our mobiles. Since it isn’t a recognised number we use here it was worth a quick Google to find out why the number may be calling us. This blog posting was No1 in Google and it pretty much says it all.

Unfortunately, it would seem that our number has been sold onto cold callers, who are in effect just SPAMMERS of the telephone world. It is amazing that the annual contract will be due within the next few weeks. Coincidence, we think not!

When they phone back we’ll go along with their sales speech thereby costing them both time, resources and call charges before saying we’re not really interested. We will also try to find out who they are and how they got our details, thereafter reporting this incident to the Information Commissioner.

IE7 and Acrobat Reader Plugin Issue

We’ve been having issues with IE7 freezing and locking up a Toshiba Portege laptop. After some simple diagnosis, it was found to be caused by the Adobe Acrobat Reader plugin integration.

Simple enough fix in this case:

1. Close down all applications

2. Start Acrobat Reader

3. Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Internet

4. Untick the “Display PDF in browser” option

5. Click Ok and wait for the Acrobat Reader installer to perform its magic and uninstall the plugin from any browsers installed.

IE7 works a treat once this plugin is uninstalled from the browser. You may also find disabling it will work for you.

The video driver was also causing issues and required to be updated.

Normally we’d have replied to this email in a polite manner and answered the inquiry. However, alarm bells were ringing with this one and a little investigation revealed the email had originated from a computer in Ghana. We could have had some fun like those wonderful people over on 419 Eater, but this would have taken too long and might not have been as satisfying as the reply that went back:

The price is £30,000 per computer. Cash upfront paid into a Swiss Bank account. Delivery in six months.

Why would I want to send computers to Ghana? Please don’t insult my intelligence!

Regards

John

Which was very promptly followed up with an email to the Yahoo Security Team informing them that suspicious / criminal like activity was happening on this account. We’ll keep you updated on how Yahoo respond to it.
