Just saw this over on Kim Cameron’s Identity Weblog. He is a world renowned identity expert, in fact an identity guru, who works for Microsoft. This is very scary stuff indeed and a totally inappropriate use of IT and other technologies involved in identity recognition. He makes some very interesting points on why this a really bad idea and highlights how the “Laws of Identity” are being breached.
Parents take note and ensure your children aren’t being exploited!

John McCain, one of the many US presidentail candidates, has embraced social networking websites as a way of engaging with the youth vote. Unfortunately for him, the people actually in charge of running his MySpace website appear to have done a number of things wrong which allowed a legal hack of his webpage.
The full details on how this was legally possible can be found HERE. This was a rookie mistake by the McCain MySpace web team, for which they should be ashamed of the unattributed use of someone else’s work and more importantly, the unauthorised use of bandwidth from another website.
Biggest lesson for all of us is to always use people who know the proper way to mitigate risks and ensure adequate security for online resources.
Another Outlook 2007 bug, which thankfully isn’t a show stopper this time.
A signature can be defined for use in new, reply and forward type emails. The signature will be inserted properly until two or more emails are selected to be forwarded. In this situation, the original emails are added as attachments (as expected), but the email body is blank – the signature isn’t created automatically.
Thankfully, there is an easy workaround: it is possible to go to the Insert -> Signature buttons on the ribbon and select the signature but this is an additional step when it should be done automatically.
Lately the common place Internet browsers have all implemented some form of anti-phishing technology, including IE7, Firefox, Opera, etc. However, should the average user trust this security function to prevent them being a victim of a phishing attack?
We thought it would be an interesting exercise to see how effective phishing filters are after The Register published an article which highlighted a new phishing website (this is the actual website so click on it at your own risk). This website has been set-up by Nigerian scammers looking to fool people into believing it to be the real website of the Metropolitan Police.
So off we went and checked the website in IE7. WOW! It wasn’t a reported phishing website. Screen capture is shown below.
We have of course reported the website for inclusion with the IE7 Phishing Filter system. We’ll check later if the website is flagged as being a reported phishing website.
We did the same test with Firefox and Opera with the exact same result: the website wasn’t detected as being a phishing website with any of the common browsers.
Bottom-line: You can’t trust the antiphishing technologies implicitly. Sure they may warn you about the vast majority of phishing websites out there but they won’t provide 100% coverage. The users still needs to be educated on spotting these types of attacks and websites and shown what to do if they detect one.
Follow-up: It has been a few days and still IE7 doesn’t detect this webpage / doman as a phishing website. Thankfully, the website has been taken down.

The server that delivers Wordpress release code has been hacked and the download file modified to insert exploit code that can make Wordpress 2.1.1 blogs insecure! It is imperative for all Wordpress 2.1.1 users to upgrade to 2.1.2 immediately.
A few weeks ago a new attack was reported that was taking advantage of poor router set-up. The bad guys are using the default settings of routers to login and change settings that allow all kinds of criminal activities to take place.
A comprehensive list of default router information is readily available on the Internet. If you are using or haven’t changed the default password on your router then now is the time to get it done!
