Login Problem with Skype

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS newsfeed so you don't miss out on all the information, news, tips and tricks.
Thanks for visiting!

Skype users may have noticed a login problem currently affecting the network. According to the updates being issued on the Skype website and status webpage, the problem should be resolved soon!

The Security Matters blog is reporting a proof of concept (PoC) that has been posted which allows denial of service (DOS) attacks on Skype. Maybe someone has taken the PoC and turned it into a real attack on the Skype system thereby bringing it to its knees. However, a Skype response denies this to be the case, instead blaming some bad programming on their part. The truth is likely to come out in the wash!

There is an important lesson in this for everyone… don’t rely on one form of communications medium. Many organisation may have or are looking at going the voice over IP (VOIP) route and this incident should show how badly an outage could affect you. It is always worth having some form of landline or mobile phone still available for use and in most cases is essential for the correct routing of emergency calls to the emergency services located in your area.

  • i have big problem with skype. in these two days i have very important meeting , but skype can not work normal.

  • I’m sure there are lots of people being affected by this unwelcome outage. Really bad news that you’ve been seeing problems for two days. Looks like this could take some time to resolve!

  • This only goes to show that a system that relies on just a few ‘back office’ people, probably with minimal knowledge of leading-edge technology, can easily fall over.

Maybe Skype is not as clever as they would like to think . . .

  • hello

  • hello pinky

  • Hello!

    what is wrong with Skype?

  • Good Day,

My ID with skype is “riddle101″ and i have been having problems logging-in lately with very long delays so i would appreciate if if you look into it.

PS. I’m in San Diego area

    Thanks,
    Yaz

  • It is incredible that Skype do not have a backup system to which they could have immediately switched. It will take years for Skype to recover from this huge crash.

  • I rely on my skype in telephone numbers to conduct my work. I hope this signing in problem is sorted soon. Im in Spain…

  • Also many problems connecting to the skype-network

  • well after having so many problems logging onto skype i switched over to ICQ. Having a husband overseas and not being able to talk sucks. Im just glad that I found a back-up plan.

  • Lets be honest its broken big time and all this “its getting better” is pure hopeful. I have not been able to use Skype for 2 days bet as a customer I get not refund or compensation for denial of service

  • I am so pissed off about this problem but more so that they make promises as to when it should be solved and they say things look better and all this trallalla, what a load of rubbish… Yes, I could log in but only for about 2 seconds, now how useful is that!? I will certainly not renew my skype-in number!!

  • This is terrible. I’m Losing Money. Not sure if you guys know this But IBM has VIOP with Sametime. I presume it more reliable. This has to be effecting over 10 Million users. What a shame!

  • Ooh come on, give them a break, will you?
Many of you, including myself, don’t even pay for
there fine service but like to complain much . . .

  • And no update on their site as to progress since 11.00 am UK time. It is now 18.00 UK time. This is not good enough Skype. There are alternatives, and I am sure a number will switch after this debacle.

  • Heads should role. A global brand who’s service is still suffering after 24 hours/ Pretty much unheard of. Whatever solution they have, it sucks.

  • just goes to show how much people depend on skype. i will keep using skype in the future but having other programs for VoIP has been really nice. Send emails and get together with people on other sites while we wait patiently for the problems to get fixed.

  • This Skype downtime is a real pain as our radio show is broadcast on a number of stations based overseas so we use Skype to keep in contact with our affiliate broadcasters as it’s cheaper than using the landline or mobile.

I’m sure that the Techies at Skype are working as hard as they can and around the clock too so that they can resolve the problem as every minute they are down is lost revenue for their company.

I’d just like to publically thank you to the Guys and Girls at Skype for keeping us, the end users, up to date on progress and I look forward to the problems hopefully being resolved very soon :)

  • This problem with skype is devastating for those of us who use the system to work. It is an outrage that repair is taking so incredibly long. It is now well beyond the 12-24 hours estimated when the system went down in Europe on Wednesday and became useless in the U.S. on Thursday. For those of us in the U.S. that use the system to work, we should seriously consider contacting the FCC. Maybe if the federal government got on them, they’d come up with a solution a great deal sooner than they are now.

  • Did anyone else lose Internet Explorer connectivity along with Skype? Even hired a pro techy to come over and they can’t figure it out here in Ukraine.

  • You bet they are losing money, just think of all the new users that cannot sign up.. It is clear they do not have a disaster recovery plan which doesn’t seem right being a subsidary of EBAY.

  • For the last two days I don’t have any skype phones!

We are a company that dependes about 50% of skype!!!

Too long to solve a problem!

I’m going to switch to another company. bye bye skype …..

  • I miss Skype ;(

  • I agree to contact the FCC so skype can get off there azzs. The millions of dollars in there bank accounts would be a good place to start at so they could keep this running.Greed is why skype is here today with there fingure up there butts.I would like a full refund immediately,You dumb azzs should be spending the cash to keep the company running instead of hoarding it in your accounts.Where do I get a $30.00 refund for my one account and another $30.00 for my other account and also where can i return the products that skype told me would work with there crappy phone service?????

  • Camon skype 2 days I cant login …do something…

  • Lets do the math here. The last time i checked there were like 20,000,000 thats 20 million people that paid skype $30.00 each to use this service.Thats about $600,000,000 dollars.Where does this money go?I know its not in there service and they have no customer service on call so maybe we should just get a refund?
Anyone who wants a refund no questions asked just contact skype and ask for it.There is no readon for the amount of money they have to be horded and leaving us sitting here with nothing while they go on vacation with our hard earned cash. The squeeky wheel gets the grease!!!

  • Although it is an inconvienence for all of us (Globally)not being able to have access nor use Skypes’ services as we have so easily in the past, let’s give them time to fix the issue at hand. I too, rely on Skype to contaact my 5 year old child in France, as I await a trial at the court of Appeals… Believe me this is a real shame for us. However, whenever in the past three years that I had a question or needed Skype for anything they where very prompt, efficient and professional. Let us not jump to hasty conclusions in contacting anyone before allowing Skype to fix the issue. The internet crashes as well! Tolerance! That is the lesson! Maybe not to put all of your eggs in any one basket… I hope it is quickly repaired!

  • Hellllllo!
Skype is a free service. Stop complaining! A refund? Whuaaahaahaa, that’s a good one……sooo funny!
Something went wrong, and they are working on it. Take you old fashion normal phone, or one of your 5 cell phones and do your business.
@ Skype, shit happens…..thanks for your free service!

  • What a shame it is a great service and FREE. Hope it gets fixed soon.

  • This outage is terrible. Let hope they get going soon. I think it harsh to bash them to bad since almost every other large internet site has gone down at one time. But they should make up for this outage by doing something nice for us.

  • Skype is not free you idiot. only for 30 days. after that you have to pay for premium service..

  • Idiot? Thanks…,You must be a very nice and inteligent person :-)
It’s free on this side of the globe ….

  • i pay for my service with skype to and its going to cost me more than the service cost hope they recover soon, before it costs me even more

  • Astrid, you have no idea, your probably using SKYPE playing games online. I am running a business and it is costing me real dollars.

  • its only fre if you don’t use skypein or out

  • having the same proplem as rex

  • Im in Europe and was counting on Skype to let me tell my family how I was doing. Skype really let me down.
We should get some credit or something for the inconvience.

  • Rex, if you keep calling people idiots you will lose clients anyway! And no….I do not play games online. I am running an int. development org. for sick children in Africa.

  • This is very true Astrid - basic Skype service is free, that is if you use Skype to call PC to PC to another Skype user.

If however you choose to subscribe to any of the premium services such as Skype In numbers, Skype Out so as you can call landlines and mobiles etc, Voicemail Services and Skype Pro then costs are involved.

I have THREE paid Skype Pro accounts all with Skype In numbers for work use; at present I can not stay logged in to my accounts for more than a couple of minutes at a time and YES it is inconvenient but I’m waiting patiently for the fault to be resolved…… Just for reference to the people saying that two days is to long to resolve the fault - The last time I had a fault on the landlines it took my telecoms provider one week and a day to resolve it!!

Chill, relax, calm down and use alternative methods of contact everyone - Have we all forgotten how to type emails?

  • Life is sometimes bloody when you live on the cutting edge.

This outage and its magnitude clearly show that whatever we might read or believe, VOIP is still cutting edge.

So, “take a deep breath” and relax a bit. (Yep, I’d wondered why Skype chose that slogan.)

  • Baaaahahahaha just send a skype msg to let them know U cant login! Baaaahahahhahahahahha!!!!

Yip but it sure sucks! Never thought a big and well known company would die world wide…. :-(

  • It is a second day now that the Skype doesn’t work (Durban - South Africa)! Are these people for real - what’s taking them so long to fix it, do they have a real qualified technicians working on the problem ? In this Hi-Tech age FIXING THIS PROBLEM CERTAINLY SHOULDN’T TAKE SO LONG !!!! Hana

  • Hi,

I actually sent very early in the morning an important sms to Greece using my cell phone number as agreed with Skype to find out many hours later that did’nt work.

I feel much more relieved now as I managed to see your problems notice.

Hope the skype symbol gets back ” green ” very soon! WELL IT WORKED RIGHT NOW!!

  • it is terrible… just unacceptable. the real problem is not that it went down, but that there was almost NO effort to communicate the problem… and that it’s taken days to fix. I guess you can vote by taking your bizz elsewhere, but i like and use the service. Also, with the sheer number of users, it’s hard to compete. But they owe us better service!
Meanwhile, I’m getting in for brief periods…then rigt back off. UGHHHHHH!!!!!

  • Nope still nothing..worked only for a couple of seconds..let’s wait

  • Yes Rothy13 they could at least have sent an e-mail. I had to download the skype.com to see their message.

  • If they can take down Skype then they can take down Paypal as well.

Lesson learned. Save a few $$$ on VOIP and pay for it 10 times over in lost business.

  • How many of you rely *only* on Skype for calling around? With very few exeptions, I think most of us have an old-fashioned phone or a cellphone, isn’t? When I read things like “I have a business, I’m loosing money because Skype is down” I ask myself what a crapy company you have if you cannot afford 20$ per month for a decente phone line… Skype has worked without any major problem for 5 years… and most users do not even pay for using it!

  • cost way more if you have to call europe with any regular phone service

  • Every business has it’s system failures. It’s not how many or how often they occur, but how fast and completly they can repair it, and prevent future failures. Skype has given me exemplary service up to this point, and I have complete confidence in their abilty to resolve the current issues. If you people run businesses, then you know where I’m coming from. Patience is the key.

  • I´m still problems today with sign in.
    I need skype very urgent
    This is not possible.
    I don´t have comunications.

    Vitor Maia

  • the problem that we have is i can log in then i lose the connection, the connection comes and goes.please help us and reply to us as soon as possible so i know what to do.

  • Franky, well said!!!!

  • we need it to be fixed as soon as possible

  • This situation with Skype reminds me of the adage:

You get what you pay for.

This lack of quality is unacceptable. There are ways of testing programs before widespread implementation. I wonder what the Skype engineers were drinking when the decided to release the new version of software.

I have grown to depend on Skype for business-related items. Two days of service without Skype have caused a major issue for me.

I’ve lived with miscellaneous Skype connectivity issues as I’ve assumed that they have “growing pains”. However, I’m now going to look for a different primary solution and have Skype as a backup. It seems safer that way.

  • Oh my girlfriend in Switzerland has been able to login, but not me, I am in Bangalore, india, even i am able to login for a few seconds… when is skype gonna work?? :(

  • Here in France we have still the same problem as yesterday, and like Haifa. The connection is possible just one second and pffff disappear immediatly.
I’ve download the last version, when i’ve seen that it’s a version from today, but same problem !
So please, please help us !

  • Damn! People are really impatient, when i saw the huge list I thought that this problem was going on for weeks and I just didnt notice, but then saw todays date on every single message! When any phone company crashes, be it mobile or landline, it usually takes them nearly a week to fix, and they do not have 20 million customers or are nowhere near the size of skype. Heck, if one of you has something wrong with your computers and wants to fix it it probably takes hours just to fix one computer and i know because im a technician myself. So imagine a global company who has millions of computers working at the same time. Cut them some slack, they have been more supportvie then any other copmany I have dealt with in my life. Be patient and try to appreciate the amount of work that needs to be done.

  • I cannot understand why people complain even when they are getting the service free. Start paying then you will have earned the right to complain.
to the skype team: you provide a good service and we who appreciate are patiently waiting for the service to get up and running.

  • People… I too use Skype for business, and yes, have been a little put off by the problems with the service. But, I only paid something like $25 US for an entire year of SkypeOut. Overall, I have been very happy with the service. Is it an inconvenience to not be able to use the Skype service? Of course. Is it something that is going to cause me major losses in income or business? Only if I did not have an alternative way to communicate such as a cell phoneor an old-fashioned telephone. But I DO have a cell phone. Some posters in this blog have asked “Why does Skype not have a backup or recovery plan?”. Well, take a look in the mirror and ask the same question of yourself. Just my two cents.

  • Thank you Bader, Alpha and KW - Very well said! I am in complete agreement with you all and I couldn’t have put it better myself.

  • Excellent point, kw.

I have Skyped “backed-up” by simply forwarding to my cell phone if I cannot answer–or as now, when the service is down.

I haven’t missed a single incoming call. And, I can place any outgoing call via my cell phone.

It’s Skype’s fault not to have the problem quickly resolved, but it the user’s fault not to think ahead for him/herself–especially when it would have been so easy to do.

  • I paid over 30 dollars twice for two accounts and I paid another $180 for the GE stand alone no pc needed to run skype and another 50 dollars for the d-link skype box and every bit of this money was spend because Skype is so secure and safe. What a crock of shiz,This company is greedy and hoars the cash instead of installing the proper back ups needed to correct a problem like this. You know dam well they tried to get by being cheap and thats WHY they got nothing now.Greed Skype Greedy Owners, and greedy executives want to save it all.Now its time they pay the piper,ASK FOR A REFUND IF THEY DONT COME THROUGH SOON ! ! ! ! I NEED my service or Im changing to another one that can deliver like…

  • Well … the system is free of charge so may be some people are loosing money but they didn’t give anything for using it for so long… I miss skype too, and I don’t like this either but I hope that the creators of skype will have a back up plan next time when something crashes or goes wrong so badly… I really hope that they will learn something from this…

  • I took a few minutes to present you with a list of alternatives:

  • hi,
few years ago I’ve setup my own jabber server in my company. Everybody are laughing about me and saying: what for? we’ve skype!
Now I know what for, sorry people, it’s only virtual world. If you need anything stable, make it self.
    Do you’ve problem? I haven’t any, have a fun,
    greetings from Hamburg
    Thomas

  • It seems to be working again - thanks God - but for how long, let’s hope it’s fixed now !

  • My Skype client has just now remained logged in for more than 2 minutes without going down again since the “Great Skype Outage of 2007″ began.

Thanks, Skype. I’m certain some people likely need sleep now. I trust all remains well. (But, keeping my fingers crossed.)

  • Hi All,
here in France as every where else in the world..it doesn’t work…no skype…and please let me tell you that the problem is not regarding free/not free…cause if some of you paid for skype in/out it s obviously because skipe is free for most of peaople as IM and pc to pc call…so Skype is known by everybody, consequently you herad about this opportunity, used it and finally paid to get more service ( skype in/out )…so forget this claims abour free/not free…skype doesn’t work for 2 days and THIS IS A SHAME…For sure Skype team will leanr a nice lesson they will invest in more public relation and “spin doctors” instead of engineers…just to be able to manage the next “crash”…it s a shame to read information on their web site…

  • You are lucky, Hana. Alas, mine is still down.

Relative to all the comments about patience, backups, freeware, etc. All true. I, in fact, have cell phones, land lines, fax machines, but I have become dependent on Skype and have been a proselytizer of the services. Just disappointed - haven’t lost any sleep or money over the issue.

BTW, I generally frustrated by software incompetence. I think there should be some accountability and that the person who designed or wrote the faulty software should be fired, reprimanded, or have a decrease in his salary!

  • funny to read it on skype forum http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=94425

  • Ok, will you all please, stop complaining so much, your losing money….so what, skype is an amazing program, and a great addition to anything you have, is have to say over my time of searching skype is the best quality voip program made, and its free,So you get 2 days down, because of a DOS attack and your bad talking them, thats pathetic, im willing to say they have been working there asses off around the clock to fix this problem, and all you do is criticize them about it, just be patient and it will come back up.

P.S. iv been down for 2 days as well, my friend from was going to make plans with me to come visit, i haven’t seen him in 3 years, so don’t think i dont understand you.

  • Well it appears initially to be good news from here in North East England; my Skype has been online now for almost two hours without disconnecting - Hopefully the problems are almost resolved……

  • Yea, I am beginning to believe it was not a problem entirely “internal” to Skype. I suspect sinister outside forces at work. A DOS attack is certainly conceivable. In fact, might Skype have been held hostage throughout all of this. Did it fork over a ransom? (Yea, ain’t rumors fun?)

Regardless, thanks to Skype’s engineers for getting me back online.

(Okay Skype, remember to come clean with us. Please don’t get caught lying after this.)

  • Oh, that’s just great. I downloaded and installed the *new* Skype client and now cannot get logged in again.

WARNING: IF YOU HAVE SKYPE WORKING, THINK TWICE ABOUT INSTALLING THE NEW/UPDATED CLIENT!!!

Jeesh. Okay, now I’m losing patience about all of this. Skype, I install your client upgrade only to have the grief begin anew?! What’s up with that?

  • I had no problem logging on with the update, after Skype was finally working again that is.

  • Well, I’m logged back in again now.

Oops, spoke too soon. Just fell offline again.

    Now online again.

    Now offline again.

    Now online again.

    Now…

…to be continued. (Don’t you just love a cliffhanger?)

  • Well, folks….. you may have been using Skype for a while or you may be new. Let me inquire as to the cost? If you signed up and paid very little, you can be glad that you had good service so far! Quit your belly-aching! I fully expect that as their ability to have all these services that generally cost more (on other sites) comes in, we will see an increase in our subscriptions. I for one am willing to ride out the storm. Not liking the no access aspect, but ……. How much did we really expect to get for less than $60.00 a year? AndYOU, did you not have your own back up plan (ie cell phones etc…….?) Come on folks, maintain perspective. (I’m in Texas- USA)

  • What version have you just installed ZenWarrior?

I’ve just checked for updates and am apparently running on the latest version 3.5.0.202 (which I actually downloaded and installed yesterday)

  • back-ups are good things….gizmo for one (both mac and pc compatible, plus works with a variety of instant messengers), and there are any number of voip possibilities out there — perhaps not instantly usable for business — but for significant others and people you’ll miss talking to — it’s always sensible to have a fall-back plan…even if it’s just a place you can create a temporary (and very web 1.0) chatroom such as: http://www.sl-chat.de/SL-Chat

  • Folks,

See our latest post where the Gizmo Project gets a mention, we announce Skype to be working again (well it is for us) and there is a link to a new version of Skype:

    http://www.roundtripsolutions.com/blog/2007/08/17/281/skype-online-again/

    http://www.roundtripsolutions.com/blog/2007/08/17/282/new-version-of-skype-2/

Hopefully things are indeed getting better in the Skype garden.

  • Skype is Incredible even with this issue my Herbalife website can’t live without it!

  • Still not working here in Morocco!!!
    Hope it’ll be resolved soon…

  • I thought it was just may pc that had problems, I am just glad I not just relying on skype, back to old technology again, texting!

  • i love you skype your shis…

  • Now it works! I’m in Denmark.

  • I understand that from time to time in new world we live in of information…that machines and their systems can and will fail…I give Skype the benefit of the doubt that they are doing the best they can to resolve the issue…after all…as has been pointed out…Skype is losing a great deal of money too…so it is in their best interest to resolve this problem as quickly as possible…in addition, all businesses should have backup systems of communication…just as Skype should have backup systems themselves…but my main concern has nothing to do with any software or technical problem…Skype, should have been more considerate of their customers and sent out email notifications of their problem…and hopefully will offer some incentive, just a small token of customers who have been patient with this issue…as a way to continue to keep customer loyalty…Skype needs to improve their customer service…this has nothing to do with the issue they are working on…the leaders in this company need to examine any and all contingencies for dealing with catastrophic failures…both from a technical point and from how they handled their customers in a situation like this…people want to and need to be informed on anything that happens to their service, as soon as it happens, and have continual updates as to the progress of the issue being resolved…in life things happen…it is how we react to what happens that makes the real difference…people should try and relax and find alternative means of communication until the problem is resolved…Skype needs to compensate people for time lost of its use(they have no problem taking a person’s money when it is functioning properly)…will Skype find a way to make it right with their customers?…I surely hope so…so I guess everyone will just have to wait and see HOW Skype treats their customers once this issue is resolved and also in the future…that will show just how professional, dedicated, and honest Skype is with its customer base.

  • I was disgusted to find the message “cannot connect” has been replaced with “password not recognized”.

  • Okay, I understand what you’re saying, but any online company should realise that changing software with the systen running is asking for trouble. It would have been wiser for Skype to announce a temporary downtime for the system while the software was being updated instead of changing horses in midstream and leaving everyone wondering what happened with little in the way of explanation. This is not only common sense but good business practice.

  • Again a proof, as the poster posted that its bad to rely on one operator or service!
On my cell phone I have Fring, it works with MSN, Skype, Googletalk, ICQ and any sip service such as VIOPBuster.
At my office and at home I have also VoipBuster installed which can do the same as Skype and its even cheaper.
Phone numbers are free when opening a account and sound quality is great!
Also MSN can do the job as GoogleTalk.

I think that the future will lay in software such as Fring that can handle all VOIP service in one window so when Skype runs dry you have plenty of other choices to make you call or chat!

  • Failures can happen & i think the solution should be complete. whats the use if the other part of your world can’t login ha ha…. that really sucks….

  • Great! Things seems to go better! At 23:30 (in Switzerland) I was able to place a call to my friend in Argentina. 20 minutes without any problem! Dear Skype team, congratulation!!!

    [End quote]

My version is 3.5.0.214. So yes, it’s newer than what you now have.

    I found it at http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Skype_for_Windows/1062684717/1

  • Oh, and it’s been working with no more disconnects for an hour or so now.

(Note: I’m in North Carolina, USA.)

  • We downloaded 3.5.0.214 from the main Skype website. Give “the main source” a try.

  • We’ve just remoted into one of our customer locations in Nigeria and managed to download the new version of Skype.

Hopefully this version is available all over the globe!

  • the version 3.5.0.214 is available on skype web site…but so strange they didn’t announce it as a problem fixed.. ??

  • My About box shows version 3.5.0.202, and the Update box says I have the latest version. Who do I trust? Before I install the 214 build, has anyone had any problems with it?

  • semms to be great with the 214….but WHY there is no offical message on skype web site…??

  • David A. Seiver said (August 18th, 2007 12:04 am ):

“My About box shows version 3.5.0.202, and the Update box says I have the latest version. Who do I trust? Before I install the 214 build, has anyone had any problems with it?”

Yes David mine says exactly the same and as the 202 version appears to be working fine I’m holding off doing an upgrade to 214 until Skype prompt me to just in case……

  • Yes the new 214 build is working great and seems to much more stable.

  • Thanks for the reassurance. Upgraded and everything is A-OK so far. Status line says there are over 4 million people on-line, so I guess we’re good to go.

  • Well, I do notice one thing about the 214 build. More Skype advertizements.

  • I would agree that it is important to have multiple forms of communication so that you don’t get stuck in an outage. But, there doesn’t seem to be any reason why that couldn’t be two different voip providers. For example, it seems like you could have a service like skype for day-to-day communication and Vonage as a traditional telephone replacement. Ultimately, it seems like two types of internet phone service can give you reliability and cost savings- Vonage is literally hundreds of dollars a year cheaper than traditional phone service. Read that here: http://www.nextadvisor.com/voip_services/

  • The big point is to reduce the points of failure. By using a traditional telephony landline and a VOIP solution you will ensure continued service when a broadband outage occurs.

Another problem with some VOIP services is emergency calls, even to the point they have it in their T&Cs that the VOIP service should not be used for emergency calls. No such issue with landlines.
